Genealogy is the craft of tracing your family tree. The
courses listed below will introduce and explain the basics of recording
your data, using sources, and discovering your family history.
You will also learn about occupations, numerals, jargon and more.

COG101 - First Steps in Genealogy
Searching for personal sources; Using a computer or a notebook to
record your information; Extending your research to elderly relatives;
Learning basic genealogical standards; Investigating the census; Organizing
your findings.
All students are to take COG101 First Steps in Genealogy before proceeding to Level 2
COG201 - Leaps and Bounds in Genealogy - CLOSED
COG202 - The Source of the Story
Some of the sources you will need when ancestor-spotting: where to find them and how to use them. Covers personal, local and printed, national and internet sources
Note: Students who took COG 201 Leaps and Bounds in Genealogy during 2006 through 2008 do not need to take COG 202, as it is a renaming of the same course
COG203 – Vital Statistics
This course follows the documentation that surrounded an ancestor from birth to death. It includes sections on certificates and banns; censuses; old handwriting and spelling; wills
COG204 – Occupations Old and New
Covers jobs and job titles that you may come across in your family tree research. Also included are some occupations that have appeared in the Star Trek universe
COG205 – More Occupations Old and New
A sequel to COG 204, this investigates more job titles from past times, and includes a section on occupations as experienced by Archer, Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway
COG206 – Medical Matters
This challenging course covers antique names for diseases and their symptoms, some ancient, some still with us
COG207 – The Language of Genealogy
This course outlines Latin words that you may encounter in your genealogical research: days, months, relationships; Roman numerals, how to read and write them; abbreviations and modern genealogical jargon
All students are to take at least one Level 2 course before proceeding to Level 3
COG301 - To Genealogy… And Beyond!
This course places the ancestors from your family tree into a historical
and social setting. Covers personal, local, national and international
history.
